Electrolysed Water

Electrolysed Water

The chemistry underpinning electrolysed water (EW) has been known for centuries, in fact demonstrations were performed in the first decade of the 19th century at the Royal Society by Nicholson, Carlise and Davy.  The first large scale application of electrochemical disinfection occurred a century later when the technology was used on a large scale for disinfecting drinking water.

Electrolysed Water is produced by inducing an over-potential in a saline solution. This is similar in principle to the storage of electrical energy in the electrolyte of a lead-acid battery. This over-potential (ORP) changes the normal equilibrium in pure water (H2O) to favour production of oxidative radical species such as hydroxyl ions (OH), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and ozone (O3). When chloride salts are added (such as sodium chloride), novel chloride species such as hypochlorite ions (ClO) and hypochlorous acid (HOCl) can be produced. This latter molecule, hypochlorous acid has a particularly potent broad spectrum anti-microbial activity.

Ozo Innovations’ electrolysed water systems break with the tradition of electrolysing water using an anode and cathode separated by a semi-permeable membrane. By using advanced electrodes and electrolysing in flow, Ozo avoids a number of limitations that have prevented the wider adoption of EW including:

  • Anodic and cathodic solutions have very different pHs (2 and 12) and properties
  • Anodes & cathodes must be cleaned and the semi-permeable membrane changed regularly
  • The electrolysis produces chlorine and other gases
  • Membrane based machines are expensive to buy and maintain and are often unreliable

Ozo Innovations’ electrolysed water is produced in a robust and scaleable process using a patented flow cell technology without the need for a membrane. EW is generated using salt + water in an elocube(TM) or an
elosystem® which applies a DC voltage across layers of boron-doped diamond electrodes. This induces a dipole, allowing very high ORPs to be generated in continuous flow. Ozo Innovations’ flow cells create the highest over-potential of any electrode on the market, meaning that we can produce very strong, stable solutions of electrolysed water, close to pH neutral, very efficiently and cost-effectively at industrial scale.

The over potential is directly related to potency of the EW generated, and Ozo can produce EW at between 10-40X more antimicrobial actives than competitor systems.  This enables greater robustness of hygiene outcomes achieved in shorter contact times and new applications of electrolysed water to be realised.

elosystem® is a registered Trade Mark of Ozo Innovations Ltd.

Why electrolyse water in flow?

  • No anode or cathode products to manage, just neutral EW
  • A greater range of active concentrations (0-3000ppm FAC) enabling new applications
  • Robust platforms enabling large volume of electrolysed water to be produced
  • No membrane to pop and need replacing
